Web confinces

On Friday we were exposed to a real example of a Web Confrince. I can deffinently see the potential, however, every technological advance has it's downsides. It's really convienient for businesses to have virtual conferences via webcam. In the past, people were forced to either travel long distances or host conference calls to have conversations many people can participate in. Even so, conference calls are difficult to set up and there are no visual aides, unlike those available with webcams. Obviously, the more traditional face-to-face meetings are the least convenient. Some people actually fly across the country on business trips to this day. However, web cams can be a bit pricey and hard to set up if you aren't familiar with technology. Also, you have to have the appropriate computer and if your processor is too slow, a web cam might be useless. Many people will never adjust to online conferences. In the future, as the technology matures, I figure this generation will become accustomed to online meetings and use that method alot more than the working generation now because they grew up in the age of computers.

This week in Communication class....

I completed the 'Getting started' tasks. I got pretty aggravated because it was very difficult to research and watch podcast when the internet simply refused to cooperate. Afterward Blake, Tony and I started working on our first podcast. I had some trouble finding something worth 'reporting' on so I just settled on the infamous Kanye West VS. Taylor Swift controversy. I'm not entirely sure what the other two chose as their subjects. That's about it, in a nutshell.

Three examples of a podcast

1) Click here to view the 'Miley and Mandy Show'. In this video Miley Cyrus and her best friend, Mandy laugh and yell... loudly. They run/dance around and precede to act like best friends.

2) In this video, self-proclaimed bestfriends, Miley and Mandy allegedly poke fun at fellow Disney channel stars, Demi Lavoto and Selena Gomez. They imply that Demi and Selena have gap teeth, wear too much black and are 'emo'.

3) In this video, Miley and Mandy at first talk about getting up early and sarcastically comment about eachother's hair. Then they talk about Ryan Secrest. Uneventful.

Facebook video

In this video about fraud on Facebook, a woman received urgent messages from her cousin's Facebook account requesting several thousands of dollars. The woman says she was concerned so, without a second thought she began wiring money to her supposed cousin who was stranded in a foreign country. Personally, if I was in this situation, I would call my cousin to discuss it instead of sending messages about something so important through Facebook. As with pretty much any information you get from the internet, you have to ask questions and be skeptical if you want to avoid getting ripped off. To me, the lady in the video seemed overly niave about the dangers of identity theft and fraud on the internet- especially through social networking sites. I don't think it is necessarily Facebook's job to mediate criminal activity because the majority of Facebook's users are over the age of 18 therefore, just like in the real world they should remain aware and alert. Fraud can happen anywhere, even on Facebook or Myspace. This video should not come as a shock to anyone, in my opinion.

What is a podcast?

What is a podcast?
A podcast is a series of either audio or video files that are released in a certain order and available to download. The word podcast comes from broadcast in the sense that a podcast is an ongoing series of 'episode' audio or video files. People who download these files on a regular basis are sometimes referred to as podcasters, while those who make the podcasts are known as podcasters.

How are podcasts used?
Podcast files are easily downloaded to a variety of media players like computers, ipods, zunes- the list goes on and on.
